Overview of Breast Lift Surgery
The breast lift (or mastopexy) operation is performed to remove excess skin and to lift the nipple to a more youthful appearing position.  The type of lift varies depending on how droopy the breasts are before surgery.  For patients with a minimal amount of droopiness, an incision around the areola is used.  This is known as a circumareolar or "donut" breast lift.  For moderate droopiness, a vertical extension is added to the areolar scar.  Often this scar is referred to as a "lollipop" pattern.  For patients with severe droopiness, typically horizontal incisions will need to be added taking the shape of an “anchor” or "inverted T."  A breast lift can be combined with a breast augmentation in patients without adequate breast tissue or in patients who interested in more superior fullness of their breasts.  A sports bra is worn for the first 4 to 8 weeks following surgery.

Anesthesia in breast lift surgery:  The vast majority of patients undergo general anesthesia when a breast lift is performed.

Length of surgery:  Usually a breast lift can be performed in 2-3 hours depending on the extent of droopiness and the type of lift being performed.

Risks of breast lift surgery:  Infection, bleeding, poor scars, loss of nipple sensation, asymmetry, delayed wound healing, early recurrence of droopiness

Average recovery time from breast lift surgery:  The majority of patients are able to return to work in 3-4 days.  Patients are encouraged to wait 3-4 weeks before resuming normal activity.  Generally it takes 4-6 weeks before one is feeling back to normal after a breast lift.

Duration of effect:  8-10 years
