Overview
Ear reshaping or "otoplasty" is a procedure which reshapes ears which are prominent, abnormally shaped or both. The procedure is commonly performed on children after the age of seven. Many adults also choose to undergo the surgery after years of being concerned with the appearance of their ears. Small incisions are placed on the anterior and posterior surface of the ears. Permanent sutures are used to reshape the cartilage and to often set the ears closer to the head. Otoplasty definitely has a high level of patient satisfaction. Many female patients immediately feel free to wear their hair back for the first time.
Anesthesia type: Patients usually decide to undergo the procedure using general anesthesia. On occasion, patients choose to have the procedure perfomed with IV sedation or local anesthetic with an oral sedative.
Length of surgery: The procedure usually takes 2 to 3 hours to perform depending on the severity of the case.
Risks: Infection, bleeding, poor scars, asymmetry, loss of sensation, recurrence
Average recovery time: After surgery a dressing is head dressing is left in place for the first 5 to 7 days. Pain medicine is usually necessary for the first few days only. A sports headband is worn at night for two weeks. Most adult patients return to work in 7-10 days and are able to resume normal activity in 2 to 3 weeks. Generally patients are feeling back to normal in 4-6 weeks.
Duration of effect: Barring a complication, results are typically permanent.
