Eyelid Plastic Surgery

Eyelid Plastic Surgery - Before    Eyelid Plastic Surgery - After

Overview
Cosmetic eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is used to improve the appearance of the eyelids.  Some patients elect to treat the upper or lower eyelids only.  Other patients are candidates to have the upper and lower eyelids addressed at the same time.  During blepharoplasty excess eyelid skin and fat are removed in most cases.  In some patients bulging fat of the lower eyelids is repositioned only through an internal or transconjunctival incision.  Incisions are typically made externally when excess skin is a major issue.  In older patients, additional procedures, such as a canthopexy, are often performed to improve the integrity of the lower eyelid.  Eyelid surgery is commonly combined with brow lifting and face lifting to provide the most harmonious result.

When considering eyelid surgery, it is important to notify Dr. Gallego if you have any of the following:  glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, detached retina, thyroid disorders or cardiovascular disease.

Anesthesia type:  When performed along with other surgeries of the face, general anesthesia is commonly used for eyelid surgery.  In some cases, patients elect to have IV sedation only, particularly if only the upper lids are being addressed.

Length of Surgery:  2-3 hours usually,  but it can be quite longer if combined with other operations of the face such as a face lift.

Risks:  Infection, bleeding, poor scars, asymmetry, blindness, dry eye syndrome

Average recovery time:  After eyelid surgery most patients are able to return to work in 7-10 days.  Generally patients are able to resume normal activity in 2-3 weeks and state that they are feeling back to normal in 4-6 weeks.

Duration of effect:  8-10 years
