Face Lift
Overview
The purpose of the face lift operation is to rejuvenate the face by enhancing the appearance of the lower face and neck. Face lifting entails the modest removal of excess facial skin, as well as a tightening of the cheek and neck skin. Most patients also require a tightening of the muscle or SMAS layer. Often the face lift procedure is combined with other facial procedures including brow lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), chin augmentation, and fat grafting. Scars tend to be very well hidden and are located in front and behind the ear. Depending on the appearance of the neck before surgery, some patients also require a small incision under the chin.
Anesthesia type
Anesthesia options include general anesthisia or IV sedation with local anesthesia. Because of the length of the procedure, most patients feel more comfortable with a general anesthetic.
Length of surgery
The total time often varies because the face lift procedure is often combined with other aesthetic facial procedures include brow lifting, eye lid surgery, and fat grafting. The face lift portion of the procedure generally takes 3-4 hours.
Risks
To minimize serious complications, all patients are required to obtain medial clearance from their primay care physician. In addition, patients must refrain from smoking and all medications that interfere with platelet function, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Even with these precautions the following risks still exist: infection, bleeding or hematoma, delayed wound healing, nerve injury, asymmetry, poor scars, hair loss, and the need for revision procedures.
Average recovery time
Patients typically require pain medicine for only a couple of days after surgery. A compression garment is typically worn for the first weeks after a face lift. The majority of patients are able to return to work in 2-3 weeks. Normal social activity is often resumed by around four weeks.
Duration of effect
Although results can be quite dramatic immediately following surgery, the face in time will again start to show signs of aging. The average patient can expect their result to last for 8 to 10 years.
