Overview of Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Male breast reduction is the term used to describe the treatment of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is a common disorder affecting men that involves an abnormal development of breast tissue. There are a variety of causes including medications, recreational drug use, steroids, hormonal imbalances and genetic conditions. Usually no precise cause can be determined. Affected patients typically feel very self conscious and the psychological impact of this condition can be severe. Depending on the amount of excess tissue, treatment options range from liposuction alone to techniques involving the removal of breast tissue with excess skin.
Anesthesia Type
Most patients choose to undergo the procedure with a general anesthetic. Infrequently patients will decide to have IV sedation with local anesthetic.
Length of Male Breast Reduction Surgery
Male breast reduction surgery can last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours depending on the actual technique used.
Risks of Male Breast Reduction Surgery
These include infection, bleeding, unsightly scars, contour deformities, recurrence, asymmetry, and loss of nipple sensation.
Average Recovery Time
Patients typically require oral pain medication for 3 to 4 days and return to work within a week. Normal activity can be slowly resumed within a few weeks. A compression vest is worn for roughly six weeks. Most patients feel back to normal by around six weeks.
Duration of Effect
In the absence of any large weight gain, the results should last indefinitely.
