Overview of Mastopexy
Mastopexy is a plastic surgery procedure that is performed to remove excess skin from the breast and to lift the nipple to a more youthful appearing position. The type of lift used during mastopexy varies depending on the appearance of the breasts are before surgery. For patients with a minimal amount of droopiness, an incision around the areola is used. This is known as a circumareolar or "donut" mastopexy. For moderate droopiness, a vertical extension is added to the areolar scar. For patients with severe droopiness, horizontal incisions will need to be added during mastopexy, taking the shape of an “anchor” or "inverted T." Mastopexy can be combined with a breast augmentation in patients without adequate breast tissue or in patients who interested in more superior fullness of their breasts. A sports bra is worn for the first 4 to 8 weeks following surgery.
Anesthesia in Mastopexy: The vast majority of patients undergo general anesthesia when a breast lift is performed.
Length of Mastopexy: Usually a breast lift can be performed in 2-3 hours depending on the extent of droopiness and the type of lift being performed.
Risks of Mastopexy: Infection, bleeding, poor scars, loss of nipple sensation, asymmetry, delayed wound healing, early recurrence of droopiness
Average recovery time from Mastopexy: The majority of patients are able to return to work in 3-4 days. Patients are encouraged to wait 3-4 weeks before resuming normal activity. Generally it takes 4-6 weeks before one is feeling back to normal after a breast lift.
Duration of effect: 8-10 years
